What should I expect in my Marketing position Interview?

What can I expect in a marketing job interview with a social gaming company?

  • I'm being flown out next week for an interview for a marketing position with a social game studio. I've never had such an experience, so I'm not sure what to expect. I'm sure there will be several meetings and interviews throughout the day. How should I prepare? Do marketers typically get "puzzles" to solve? What kinds of questions will they ask to help determine whether or not I'm worthy of being on their team? Thanks

Without knowing the specific company and the role that you are applying for (other than junior, I assume?) -- you're not going to get any useful advice/help outside of general input about applying for a startup as a marketer. I can tell you from being on both sides of the table at one of the largest social gaming companies -- the process (assuming you have good interviewers) isn't that much different than an interview at any other marketing-driven startup. ... Since you did ask here is "social game" specific advice -- 1) Don't call social games "silly" or that you "don't play them" in your interview because I can say that half my former colleagues didn't play social games until they were working on them every day. You're probably saying to yourself "who would ever say that in a social games interview?" -- it happens.. a lot more than you would think. 2) Play the games on your real account. If you have a half-way decent interviewer they will Facebook you, get your Facebook ID and see what levels you are on some of the games, when you joined, etc. There was an old joke back in my fraternity days that described a person's dedication to their frat. I feel a lot of it applies here. Freshman year (first 3 months) -- you're learning the ropes, you can't believe you're in this space and just can't wait to brag to your friends. Sophomore year (3 - 9 months in) -- you know some stuff,  seeing how things go and overall things are looking good. Junior year (6 - 12 months.. yes there's overlap between Soph year) -- what the fuck are you doing? These social games are retarded why didn't you remind yourself that before you applied? Senior year (9+ months and you're an "old guy") -- either you're in "fuck it" mode where you are looking for your next thing (two options -- start your own game company or get out of games completely) or you have rediscovered your love of this company and have become its #1 fan and will be loyal until the end.
