What is the worse kind of pain? (medically?

What causes this kind of side pain?

• I've had some periodic pain that has come and gone for many years. It's not a serious pain, but when it comes it's annoying and bothers me a lot. The pain in is my side/back, kind of where my kidneys are I guess. It is NOT muscle or spine related. The pain (or sometimes just tightness), is not accompanied by fever, vomiting, frequent urination, etc. that might indicate an infection. Would it still be an infection? Or kidney stones? Without those other symptoms? I used to think I needed to just drink a lot of water and cranberry juice when I had the symptoms, but that didn't seem to help. I read somewhere that ibuprofen might help and that's my new treatment (it does help), but is this ok? Why don't I ask a doctor about this? Well, the symptoms are not visible and I just have to describe it. Also, it often goes away before I get an appointment. But once, when it had been pretty bad but was getting better, I had an appointment with a doctor. He tried very hard to convince me that it was back pain that came from me being overweight and doing more walking recently. (He gave me stretching to do). A person KNOWS the difference between this kind of pain and that. Besides, most of the time when I had the same pain before, those other conditions were not true (increased exercise, etc). But he would not be convinced, so I gave up. The doctor knows best, right? Any educated opinions?
