Good bike or Used car? Think about myself or think about parents?
-
I am a middle class programmer from Mumbai and work from home. Many guys at my college had good bikes, I always dreamed about owning one. I used to think that I will get one, when I became capable of earning for it instead of asking dad for it. Recently I decided to buy a good bike. Budget: 1.3L -1.7L. So Karizma ZMR '14 , Duke, CBR 250, R15 were the considerations. I will be driving it on weekends for longer trips with friends. Now coming to my family, we don't own a car. Recently we went to some family function where everyone came by their car and my parents went by bus and then auto-rickshaw. I felt nasty about myself. I am planning for a 1.7L bike whereas my parents go in the crowded bus and still fight with auto-walas for unfair fare? I don't have budget for new car, but I surely can afford used car like Swift or some hatchback so that I can take my family to anywhere they want. On the other hand, I am 24. It's my time to enjoy my bachelorhood. I won't get these years back. I wanna show off my new brand, expensive bike among everyone, enjoy it and be proud about it. But I really love my parents and wanna give them all the luxury that I can afford. What should I do? :o(

Answer:
If I suggest you then you should go for used car . Now here are some of the cons and pros : *If you want to buy a bike for fun and show off which i think don't last long because later on you might feel regret as car will help you in summer (when its too hot) , in winter ( when its too cold ) ,in heavy rain , more passengers ,no wearing of helmet stuff , no shopping problem (if you want to carry more things ) and solve your family problems too (like going to parties , longer trips etc.) . * As you might be aware of mumbai traffic , there is more risk of accident in a bike comparitively to a car because even if you are smashed there are high chances of being saved as compare to a bike and even if you ride safely you can't trust other people on the road . (just a worst case scenario) . *If you are sure that after 1-2 year you are able to buy a car then currently you can go for a good bike and later on after enjoying your time you can buy a second hand car ( if you are really keen to buy a bike) . * More important a good bike although make "you" proud of it but think about this a used car will make your "family" proud of it . *Since you are a family guy so your safety must be your first preference because your safety includes your family too otherwise bikes too have advantage like economical fuel, traffic congestion avoidance ,etc. P.S. I drive both car and bike so i just told you my experience now it is up to you what you want .

Thanks for A2A. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" - Spock You're a programmer, you work from home, you say you're in college. So I assume you're a college going student. That means you have a lot more of life ahead in your future. So, get a car for your parents right now if that makes them prouder. There's a plenty of time later in your life for you to showoff in front of your friends with a good bike. Patience is the word. Good luck.

The great Indian family "emotional" debate. You have to realise that nobody, absolutely nobody can make your decision. All of us here on Quora, your friends, your colleagues can only give you suggestions. But in the end it is you who has to decide whether you want that bike or a car for your family. Only one thing I can & would like to point out is even though the initial cost of both your options are same, the running cost & overall lifetime value differs by leaps & bounds. A new bike will require somewhere around Rs.1000-2000 pm for fuel etc depending on your riding distance etc. whereas a car will require at least 2.5-4 times that amount if you cover the same distance. The resale value of the car will remain almost same (since it is already a second hand car, it won't depreciate much from what you pay) but the bike will almost depreciate to half in market value in roughly 6 months. Look at the numbers, decide on your needs based on your emotions/perceptions & choose one. P.S. If it were me I'd buy the car. I could use it for the weekend drives as you have mentioned & when required my family could take it as well. But that's just me.

Buy 2 new bikes. One with best milage. Other with best speed within your budget. For eg: A Bajaj Discover for your parents, and a Pulsar for yourself. Give the Discover to your dad. Problem solved. :) (The reason I am giving this idea is that used cars at 1.5 Lakhs suck and about the 'prestige' a new bike is much prestigious than a car. And you can take your bike anywhere like crowded market but not your car.)
