What is the best way to create a Facebook business profile?

Is there still a difference between types of businesses and their profiles (fans vs. friends), if so what are the steps to get the "best" business profile?

    Hi there, There are pages and groups on Facebook. Over the years the two have gotten more similar, but there are a few differentiators. Some people think only groups get indexed by Google, but actually both groups and pages get indexed. Although this is confusing, it was smart of FB to create these other concepts so that a "friend" is more likely to be an actual person - that is where Myspace screwed up.... Groups can be invite only if you want, so that adds an element of exclusivity if that is what you are looking for. Groups also allow you to do mass messaging right to the inbox, which can be very useful for marketing purposes. Pages notifications tend to get lost. Pages do however let you add custom apps, so the level of tweaking it out is higher. It really depends on what your goals are. If you really want to customize and trick it out go with pages. If you want to message people and don't have a lot of custom apps to add, groups are a better fit. Hope this helps!

Very good advice from Anne Ahola. The way I think of FB business pages: they are very helpful if providing a place for your customers to talk together is appropriate for your business. Obviously, it's great for a fashion designer (for example), not so applicable to a lawyer. FB is about community. You can make a FB business page that is not connected to a personal profile, but your options will be somewhat limited under that structure. Better to assign a personal profile, and if it needs to change later because of job transitions, etc., that can be accomplished by just changing the admins. It's important to realize that your Fans (or 'Likes') don't return to your FB page, probably. Once they Like you, they just depend on your updates to keep them in touch. If you want them to return to your page, you'll have to offer a good reason why. Also, this means that making your FB pages flashy and impressive is less important than providing regular, attractive updates. As always, knowing and mapping out precisely what you hope to gain by having your FB business page is key to achieving success with it.
