How to start a career in Project Management?

Where should I start if I want to pursue a project management career at a tech company?

  • I have recently graduated from a UC with a degree in the social sciences and I am eager to start my career as a project manager but, i'm not quite sure where to start. Is it just a matter of filling out online applications, networking with people at the companies I would like to work for, or a combination of both?

  • Answer:

    I'd suggest that you do both AND also start educating yourself in the particular areas that you want to work in.  As John pointed out, educate yourself on project management.  If you want to manage software development, it would behoove you to take some software engineering classes and some Agile training.  All of the people skills in the world will not help you if the team members can snow you with baloney.

To be frank, getting break as project manager in a tech company is difficult as generally career path is for people to move from individual contributor to project lead to project manager. Another path could be to become part of PMO or some kind of software process management group. For that you can focus on two areas: 1) Learn project management via going through PMP (start with Rita Mulacy or HeadFirst  2) Focus on process part of particular technical area. For software, learn software engineering
