What are the effects of the progressive era?

What are the best resources for quickly learning the fundamentals of modern business development, particularly, but not limited to, for Internet-era businesses that rely heavily on network effects?

• The answer to this may just be "make it up as you go along and follow the lead/blogs/Twitter of people you respect," which is fine, but I'm wondering if there are any fundamental patterns, processes, issues, etc, in business development that can be picked up from reading a book, or a set of cases, stuff like that.  I'm imagining there are classes on this in business school, though obviously it's going to vary by school/professor, but I'm looking specifically for modern takes that account for the network effects inherent in Internet-based businesses.  More general resources are also welcome.
