What are the differences between the M.Eng and the MS in engineering?

Which is the best university for a master of science degree in electrical engineering, Princeton, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, or Carnegie Mellon?

  • I am trying to choose amongst theses three choices for MS in EE. Here are the details. 1. Princeton:  Bad - Unfunded MEng in EE, weaker overall standing in EE field tech Good - Lasts only one year. Maybe great for networking later on.   2. UIUC (University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign) Bad - The location is in midwest (feels very alien to me). Requires thesis and lasts two years. Good - Waived tuition w/ 50% RA. Best EE reputation out of all acceptances.   3. Carnegie Mellon (Silicon Valley Campus) Bad - Unfunded MS. Very software engineering focused (which I am weaker at) Good. - in Silicon valley. Get better at SW and computing. Also likely only 1 year.   4. Work for 1 - 2 years and gamble for Stanford/Berkeley. Bad - Lose 1-2 years of school environment. Likely still be unfunded. Obviously have to forgo my current options. Letters of rec from profs will be a bit outdated.

  • Answer:

UIUC if you plan on staying in EE. Out of your admits, UIUC has the strongest overall ECE program. Additionally they have a new building for the department opening this fall.

The MS thesis at Illinois and the necessary research experience is one of the key factors for that graduate program's high ranking. Otherwise, a MS is effectively an extended undergraduate program.  That MS will get you in the door for positions where a PhD would be necessary from other schools. As for being in the Midwest, MS students put their heads down, churn out the work, and graduate ASAP.  Nothing stops you from leaving in 1-1.5 years if you can cram in the work.

UIUC for sure. But I am biased :) You are saying the best program is the only one paying you. Seems pretty clear to me. I know the location sucks, but it will make you appreciate other places so much more.
