What's the difference between SAT and SAT subject tests?

How many SAT subject tests can be taken per SAT test date?

  • SAT subject tests, when available, are taken on the same dates as regular SAT tests. They are 1 hour long, whereas the regular SAT is 3.5 hours. How does taking the subject tests work in practice? Do you sit in the same room as those taking the SATs, only you get a different test? Would it be possible (and is it the usual situation) to take several subject tests successively, i. e. first take Maths 2 and then Physics? Is there a limit on how many could be taken, i. e. after the SAT is done everybody needs to leave?

  • Answer:

When I took the Math 2 subject test, the subject test takers were in a different room from those taking the regular SAT.  You would need to be because the timing is different. For the subject tests, you are given a thick booklet containing all of the subject tests that are available that test date.  You may take up to three of the tests.  You can take your tests in any order you choose.  You don't have to take the same tests you signed up for, and you can take three tests even if you only signed up for one, although they won't release your scores until you pay them extra money. There is an hour-long test period, a short break, another hour-long test period, etc.  If you decide to take fewer than 3 subject tests, you may leave during the break after your last test.

Max 3 per date. No the room was same. The order of the subjects gets different as per the student. The pauses between the tests takes care of the extra 30 minutes. Yeah I've taken 3 at one go, and I think most people does it.

How easy it has gotten. When I took the SATs, before they were dumbed down for the NCAA requirements, we took the SAT in the morning, ate a sandwich at our table, then took the three Subject exams in the afternoon.   One day, six hours of testing. Easy.
