What is a Proxy Server?

What is the difference between the operation of a proxy server being used to provide Internet security as in many universities and a proxy server being used to bypass filters/bans?

  • How are the proxy servers used to enforce internet security in universities?

  • Answer:

Technically not much differences, in both cases, your browser communicate with Proxy server instead of directly with server you request, and Proxy communicate with target server on your behalf. In case of corporate/universities premise is that you are able to force users to use proxy (i.e. you blocked access to all servers directly). On that proxy you can later enforce policies and log user activities. Proxy used for bypassing security works in similar way, assuming that somebody didn't already blocked access to your proxy :-).

simply telling , thought Proxy servers as your gateway between your client apps and actual servers , now you can think what gateways do right. simple. you can build your own proxy servers too.

I think the most succinct answer would be: a proxy you choose to use will probably try to be transparent - essentially a forwarder.  Whereas a proxy claimed to be for "security" will, by definition, be inspecting all traffic and filtering some.  Perhaps even modifying traffic.  Violating security in the name of security :/
