How has the French culture influenced Australian cuisine?

Why is Bangladeshi culture hugely influenced by India?

  • Pakistani culture is not that much influenced by India but Bangladeshi culture is almost totally influenced by Indian 'Hindi' culture.

  • Answer:

Answering this question is a daunting task. Thanks for the A2A. When two countries share a border, it is inevitable that some cultural exchanges will take place. However, the term "totally influenced" by India is wrong. I don't think Bangladeshis adapted much other than the "Entertainment" aspects of Indian culture. All we see as an influence is in the dresses people were (especially women), songs people listen to (lot of people do love bollywood numbers) and the way wedding programs are planned (singing, dancing, food, etc.). I am not really in a position to talk about Pakistani culture, but I think all three nations have much in common when it comes to culture. The similarities are so much prevalent that it is very common for a westerner to call people of all three nations as "Indians".

In one hand majority Bangladeshis are dependent on Bollywood and Indian Satellite Channels for entertainment on the other hand the educated elite class venerate writers, poets and artists of west Bengal. These are the reasons why Bangladeshi culture is hugely influenced by India. There is a saying in Bangla that - it is not health but disease which is contagious. That is why we are observing sexual objectification of women, nudity, extravaganza are slowly entering into Bangladeshi culture mainly influenced by Indian media.

There are already great answers here by the different Quorans. I would just love to add a few bits. First of all, lets be clear about influence and adoption. being influenced means the individuality has been modified by some other factors. And adoption means a definite addition of things from a different views.objects/subjects into one's own, and it's by choice. Being a Bangladeshi and being surrounded by heavily cultural minded persons in my family and friends, I have learned one thing- Bangladeshi culture is not heavily "influenced" by Indian culture. Rather, both Bangladeshi and Indian culture are influenced by the root culture this subcontinent had when there was no Bangladesh, India or Pakistan. And all of these countries, adopted parts of cultures from one another. The actual art and culture practice in Bangladesh has it's own individuality in many points. We have our own music genres, we have TV and Movie media hugely different from Indian ones. But, the "influence" question comes because we share the same root, and in many cases same cultural aspects. But it's not because we influence one another. To calrify things, I would like to give an example on the Musical aspects of culture- Classical Music in Bangladesh has Indian shade in it, but it is because when Classical music had been established, there were no India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. In that age, music and singing styles from all over the continent started to rise, from folk-ish and ethnic side from current Bangladesh region, to heavily defined Classical genres or "Gharanas" on current Indian regions, to Muslim influenced Ghajals and another folk part from current Pakistan - everything was widespread, and people from whole subcontinent started "adopting" things from other regions. This adoption of is an inevitable part for any society or region in this world. But that does not mean it has been influenced by it. There would be example of Bangladeshi musicians using Western musical instruments for a folk song here, that doesn't mean our folk song is influenced by Western Music. We just adopted few bits from different cultures, as every country in this world did. Similarly, India and Pakistan adopted few cultural sides from ours, Bangladesh and Pakistan adopted a few from India and also we and our neighbor adopted a few from Pakistan too. But it started way before we had been declared as individual country. The same thing iterated for every other aspects of culture in this whole subcontinent. Bangladeshi culture, as a whole general entity, has not been influenced by any country's one. But sharing the same root, had some influence. Again it's the root culture making the influence. Another questionable part of adopting Bollywood culture in Bangladesh, can be clarified. After the Golden Age of Cinema in both Bangladesh and India, we suddenly ran out of intellectual and innovative individuals who are motivated to film making. There was a time when we ran out of good movies and cinema business started to collapse. But, India, being a huge country with multiple movie industries, remained a strong unit in the Asian culture of Filmography. That's when people started to adopt Indian films and musics from that film here. Now when you come to Pakistani culture, go through there history of Cinema, you'll find that they not only have the history of adopting Indian movies, but also they released many Indian movies in there cinema halls - way more adoption than Bangladeshi people did. People do point out the heavy number of viewers of Indian TV serials from Bangladesh as an influence. Well, it's true. And, it is also true that it's not going to be a static part of the culture. Young generations are more inclined to the "TV Series" from western medias and they are adopting them. In future this will also change. This part of Bangladeshi culture has always been dynamically changing. And same goes for any other country. Band music ha been more popularized by Bangladeshi Bands rather than Indian one's. Even back in my early childhood, Indian pop culture was influenced by Pakistani's and vice versa, but we still held our own. And for rest of the case of adoption and influence of us and our neighbours, Mayeesha Tahsin has given a elaborate and beautiful answer. I hope that helps. Feel free to comment in case of addition or refutation. Thank you.
