What is the best way to get an internship at a management consultancy firm in India?
-
I am currently an undergrad student majoring in electronics engineering, and am really interested in business management but I'm finding it difficult to find such opportunities.

Answer:
I'm not really aware of management consulting internships (certainly have no knowledge of India) and didn't come across any interns while at Bain. (The closest thing I recall is summer associates, who are part way through their MBA.) However, some potentially useful resources / routes: Look for a consulting club at your institution - people there will know if such positions exist in your region and will also be able to tell you a lot more about consulting (which is key! ask lots of questions!) Apply direct after graduation: a) Find out what the background is of current consultants at the firms you're interested in, and then apply direct if suitable; b) try to speak to current employees first hand so that they can tell you what their firm is like, and how you might get in Do whatever you can to test out whether in fact business is right for you. It will serve the double purpose of demonstrating to potential employers that you've done your home work. Look for business courses, business internships, ways of showing strategic thinking, opportunities to start your own business.

India does not have a very formal internship structure unlike the western world although it has drastically changed over the last decade due to the formal process adopted by business schools. I was in a similar position in 2006, an undergraduate electronics engineer wanted to get some experience in what I believed at that time was the "business world". I ended up getting an internship at Ernst & Young in the summer of 2006 and while many details are provided in my E-book, here is a quick summary - Network like Crazy - I landed this first internship my tapping my network of family and friends. Usually getting a summer internship as a fresher is as much about who you know as it is about what you have done Be Aggressive - Cold Call/ Write Emails - Here is where Indians seem to lose out a bit (strictly a personal opinion). We do not aggressively sell ourselves enough as compared to some of what I have seen and admire in my American friends. Getting an internship is also much like a sales pitch - With almost no experience and education in an unrelated field (like the question above), you have to pitch hard for the value you bring to the table. Be aggressive (not intrusive) - cold call, write professional emails to the HR/ recruiting - follow up - pursue till you hear a "No". Before I had my E&Y internship, I had a list of 25 companies that I had called/written to. Do checkout my blog for more details on the aforementioned: http://www.indianconsulting.org/networking-for-consultants/tapping-into-new-networks-to-secure-consulting-internships/

Well, I doubt if a Management Consulting Firm in India would offer you an internship even if you are an Innovator in Electronics. But what best you can do is, find a NGO which is working towards resolving issues related to field of your interest and help them solve problems. We did the same thing, we were in our 2nd term of Masters and wanted a consulting assignment, so we joined a NGO and worked for a Project related to Women Upliftment. Later in 6th term we got a Project from a REAL Business Consulting firm to analyze Working Women Outfit in India for launching a forum for Professional Women Upliftment. I hope this idea could work for you as well, All the Very Best! PS: we had also raised funds - 1L plus and the owner of the Consulting Firm happens to be our mentor till date. I am sorry for that I can't disclose the name of the firm.
