What are the steps of becoming a Medical Doctor after High School?

What are the steps to becoming a doctor in the United States when you're a doctor in the Philippines but would like to take the USMLE & become a doctor in the U.S?

  • The doctor is planning to take the USMLE step 1 in the Philippines, and steps 2 & 3 in the states. He will be going to the states through fiance visa. Although also a registered nurse in the Philippines, he really wants to become a doctor in the states. What advice can you give him? And how long would he have to wait for his residency after passing the USMLE?

  • Answer:

In order to become a doctor in u.s. one has to graduate from accredited medical school (foreign or domestic). Thereafter you take boards (step 1, 2(both written and oral) & step 3). You can the apply for residencies through ERAS. once the applications are received by the programs one has to the go through the NRMP to rank the programs. Being a registered nurse would not qualify you to be eligible for ERAS/ or NRMP. Please see the official websites for eras and NRMP for more information.

If you want to practice medicine in USA you will have to pass USMLE Step 1 Exam. USMLE isn't an easy exam so students must prepare well for this exam. Looking after the USMLE exam courses at http://WizIQ.com at http://www.wiziq.com/course/207-Best-USMLE-Step-1-Preparation-Course I would recommend students to enroll in an USMLE preparatory course that may not only assist them in clearing the exam but also help them in boosting their morale.
