Which IIT has the best undergraduate program in CS?
-
From what I've read and heard, IIT Kanpur started the CS program in India and the first computer machine (IBM 1620) was brought in IIT Kanpur and that the faculty there is one of the best in India for CS. But in recent years, almost all the toppers who opt for CS either opt for Delhi or more frequently, Bombay. The major reason that I've heard is of faculty and placements. But from what I know, IIT Kanpur has a policy of keeping placements packages confidential (read this somewhere, so not sure about it). SO how do we know which one is better? Please answer in terms of faculty, academic curriculum, placements and potential for start-ups. Thanks! SOURCE: http://global.mit.edu/images/uploads/ExportingMIT.pdf,

Answer:
All old IITs are pretty good and you won't be making a big mistake by joining any of them. Having said that, and while realizing that such comparions are often pretty subjective and biased, I'd dare to claim that IIT Delhi CS is a better CS program for most people for following reasons: IIT Delhi's CS curriculum is more balanced across theoretical and practical dimensions. Kanpur and Bombay, for example, are more inclined towards theoretical side. Again unsubstantiated, IIT Delhi has shown a better track record in recent years in terms of job placements, specially for Silicon Valley jobs. For comparison, well over a third of IIT Delhi's CS class of 2012 is in Silicon Valley Bay Area - a number much higher than that of other IITs. More and more CS grads of IIT Delhi are opting for startups - either founding their own or joining existing ones. Not sure about other IITs. And finally, IIT Delhi has a much better location - in the middle of South Delhi - arguably the most happening part of the capital which I think is pretty good for general personality development. Other IITs don't have such an advantage. It is very much possible that my views are biased because I went to IIT Delhi myself so take them with a grain of salt but I'm pretty sure that if I were to make the choice again after all the information I have now, I'd still go to IIT Delhi.

Almost all IITs are the same and there is no way to differentiate them objectively. What is a feature to one would be a bug to another. So choose based on "your" preferences. Since I am from IIT Madras, I will make a case for it. 1) Chennai is by far the safest Indian city for women and for everyone in general. 2) South Indian food is really really tasty. 3) Carnatic Music and the culture of Tamil Nadu in general is a real treat. This reflects on the events held in Saarang(The annual cultural fest of IIT Madras). Even otherwise, Chennai is a city filled with cultural events. 4) Beach : Enough said ! 5) A really really scenic campus: I guess among the older seven IITs the only other campus that can be even comparable is IIT guwahati(In fact, this is more scenic). If it helps, a large fraction of the campus belongs to the Forest department of India. It adjoins the beautiful Guindy National Park and you can find a variety of flora and fauna here. As a final note, I will mention the following. There was a recent survey by Brown University(http://cs.brown.edu/people/alexpap/faculty_dataset.html) which gives details about theĀ undergraduate institution of the professors of CS in the top 50 US universities. 26 professors were from IIT Madras, making it the 6 th institution overall and first from India.
