How do I enlarge the print on my web pages?

Why do so few web pages print properly, and why do so many web pages print poorly and cut off text?

  • Do web developers assume that this will be an obsolete user need soon?  Or is it lazy development?

  • Answer:

Every time I evaluate a website for someone, I recommend a print CSS, because many site visitors (potential buyers) still do print out pages to refer back to, or to complete their research later. When I do websites for others, I include a print CSS. But when I'm just the one doing the experience audit (evaluation), and I come back to do a follow-up in a couple of months, clients have rarely taken that advice and had their own designer put a print CSS into place. Why do so few print properly? Because the designers aren't putting a print CSS (print style) into the code. And as says, it's not because of laziness on the part of designers. (In fact a print CSS is actually the easiest part of a site's deign, IMO—no need to be lazy about it!) You do what the client (or the boss) asks, and the clients (site owners) do not see that portion of the site's experience as having a direct enough impact on the bottom line. Unfortunately, if you can't point to bottom-line $$ numbers, sometimes, you can't make the case strongly enough for a design element that in reality, is still very much needed.
