What are the best ski resorts in Denver?

What are the best ski resorts near Denver for intermediate/advanced skiers?

  • Answer:

Most resorts worth visiting near Denver are 2-3 hours drive away, so when you say "near" that's what I'm assuming. I've been flying out to Denver and driving out to ski on three day trips usually last flight in Thursday and last flight out Sunday now for over ten years. My top recommendations for intermediate/advanced skiers are: Vail Beaver Creek Breckenridge If you're willing to drive a little farther, or take a puddle jumper flight, I'd include: Aspen Telluride Steamboat

I always head straight to Vail.  If distance and terrain are both considered, Vail is the answer (100 miles from Denver).  If you want something closer to D, I would hit Loveland.  Great spot, really close to Denver, price is right, terrain is good.

All the ski resorts in the I-70 corridor west of Denver target intermediate and advanced skiers. Loveland is probably the closest by drive time, and it has a nice variety of terrain, but there are no high-speed lifts. The other nearby major resorts (Keystone, Breckenridge, Winter Park/Mary Jane, Copper) all have high speed lifts and a wide variety of terrain ranging from never-ever bunny slopes to cliffy bowls.  Vail and Beaver Creek are a signficantly longer drive, probably too far to make a day trip.

Whichever one has the best snow! :) You've already got some good answers here. The one I would add is Wolf Creek. It's about 4 hours away, but it's a fantastic mountain that frequently has good snow even when the others don't. It's downfall is that there's not much of anything near there, so if you ski for the nightlife it's not a great destination. Further out, I've heard that Silverton and Telluride are great for the advanced skiers, but I've never been myself.

I think you have to put A-Basin in the mix ... hard to be the gnar/closeness ratio.
