What do you think about educational learning games?

What educational games or media designed for children 11 and under successfully promote self regulated learning?

  • Games or other forms of media that promote autonomy and encourages children to think about their learning.

  • Answer:

None. Game, by design, tells people what to do. There are rules, points and penalties. I might as well tell someone to go and learn - it will have the same effect: a person (child) who wants to learn will learn even without saying anything, and the child who has no desire to learn won't be compelled by an outside entity. The learning, by design, is not structured: it's messy, it comes in spurts of growth, and it is based on what interests the child. There is no one game that will provide adequate stimulation to all kids, especially based on age: kids develop at different rates, and if there was a game which would adjust self to the level of learning, it would require a substantial assessment of the child's background, skills and learning capacity: this in itself is a challenge. The problem with it all is that such a game would have to be meticulously maintained, and parents just won't pay enough to keep this game up and running.
