What is average salary for a web designer?

What is a average salary for a UI designer in a web/mobile startup?

  • First full time designer, with around 7-8 members in the team. Please answer in terms of both salary and equity (if applicable at this stage).

  • Answer:

Assuming the company has some angel and perhaps VC funding (or else cash from operations) and everyone's on salary?  1/4 to 1% equity in the form of stock options that vest over 3-4 years with a standard 6 month or 1 year "cliff", non-negotiable terms that are the same as everyone else's and give company founders and investors total control of the company, a super cool mellow work environment, and a salary level of 60-75% of what you would have in a comparable job given your experience and skill level at a large mature company.  Double the equity (perhaps) if the company lacks the funding to be sure that it'll be around in six months, and double again if you're working for free or nominal salary (say under 50% of norm).   These are very rough guesses and every company is different of course.

Well, it the depends where in the world you are working and how strong your motivation is. As for the equity you could expect 1 to 5% of the total company shares. Naturally your salary will be much lower in this constellation compared to working at an established firm as a regular employee. On the other hand if the start-up reaches a valuation of 10 million USD your shares can yield a considerable amount if you are able to cash them in. What's important are the terms of the agreement with respect to the equity that you hold. If an investor funds the company with additional capital whose shares will be traded with the investor and is your stake affected by such a trade? In other words, do you have to give up part of your equity in future in order to obtain funding for the company? Further, you need to know under what conditions you are allowed to sell your stake in the company. Somtimes there can be blocking periods of several years in which you can't sell your stake (such terms are aimed at keeping you in the company). It can also be that the decision to sell stakes has to be made collectively by all founders or is made by some founders, respectively. It can also be that if an investor invest he will demand control over decisions that concern selling equity, at least for 51% (the majority) of the shares that would grant its holder control over the company.

Hi, What kind of business you are making of? Do you need 7-8 members for production? Answer to the question, depends on how it valuable in future and opportunity for your crew. Calling minimum $70K-120K for a designer.
