What's a good strategy to get hired by a leading commodities trading company?
-
I'm a graduate in management from a leading european business school. I'm pretty excited as I think that I might have (finally!) found an industry that I'm very interested in. I am getting in touch with industry insiders, sending out emails, and I would like to have some heads up about the kind of profile that is expected from a commodity trader or manager. Note: I'm looking at the physical and marketing aspects of the commodities industry. Thanks!

Answer:
How wonderful you have found an exciting industry to be a part of! To get a better sense of the profiles in any industry, I highly recommend doing a search on LinkedIn. You can find commodity traders and managers in your area, country, or globally. Take a look to see where they've come from, what they're doing now, and with whom they're connected. Join groups for your industry as well as your alma mater, as these professionals are eager to answer questions and help you develop professionally. Hope that helps! Lynn

I have worked in 3 different commodities firm since I graduated, not as a trader but a financial controller. I would say it's a really exciting industry to be in. You gotta be extremely sharp, high energy and motivated to work in a fast moving environment. You are required to know what is going on all markets, Asian or European, at all times. Besides market information, you need to be aware of tax restrictions, price restrictions and government legislation in the countries where you source and sell your commodities. Most of all, you need to be likable to be a success trader, especially if you were to sell into the Asian market. Having said that, there is a stark difference working in different types of commodities firm. Working in a commodities firm that dominates the market and owns their own assets (E.g. BHP) rather than a smaller scale trading firms is a whole lot easier, and you get paid a lot more. On the other hand, you get a lot more fun working and flexibility working in a small trading house (refer to wolf of wall street movie less a bit of exaggeration). Because trading firms of mid scale usually have to source for their own commodities to sell (as oppose to owning their own mine etc), you might get to travel to places like Indonesia for exploration of coal mine or Ivory Cost in search of Cocoa plantation. I wish you the best of good luck.
