Should cloud database be centralized or distributed?

Is DogeTipBot running as a centralized service?

  • I didn't find much information online describing what DogeTipBot is doing behind those APIs. Is it running as a centralized service? Or does it actually have miners and is running in a distributed manner. I saw from its Wiki saying the latest version keeps an inner blockchain to record tip transactions, but is this blockchain being updated by their own server (like a centralized database) or maintained by different parties/machines/users (like a real distributed currency)?

  • Answer:

Yes Dogetipbot is a centralized off-blockchain service. It maintains its own servers to keep a transaction of all tips. By keeping tips off-chain, Dogetipbot is able to have tipbots running at zero transaction fee.

If the tipping transactions are kept off the main coin blockchain, it is centralized. This is necessary as tips would be subject to transaction fees if they were on it. The method used for the internal ledger is largely irrelevant in this case. If it were an internal blockchain, it would need "miners" to process (I used quotes because no new coins would be generated processing blocks on an internal chain) those transactions and without new coins or fees, there would be no incentive to provide hashing power to it.
