Do you know any tips on how to improvise?

What are some tips for a beginner level drummer?

  • I'm a beginner drummer playing with a band and I need tips on how I can improve myself musically. We are basically a blues band who mostly do Rolling Stones covers at the moment. I can follow the rhythm and beat very well and copy the beat with my drums (I can improvise and play around with the fills too) but I have no knowledge of music theory. I'm looking for videos, thoughts/perspectives, music theory or anything related to music which can help me deepen my understanding of music and help me play better in a band.

  • Answer:

First and foremost watch other (more experinced) people play, watch a genre of music you normally wouldn't watch. The more your pallet expands the better you will be, rock music, jazz music and symphony all have very district styles learn from them all. Don't try and copy verbatim one percussionist, instead take parts from each. As for music theory of drum set, it is a lot easier than a tonal instrument, take chord changes from songs you like and adapt them to whatever you want. Most rock songs pull from a small list of chords to play with, find which chords are most common in your type of music and match that. Have a jam session. So much fun.
