Is this iPod Touch a 2g or 3g?

Does the 3G iPhone have any advantages over the 2G iPhone when used as an iPod Touch?

  • Context: after multiple iPhone upgrades I have two iPhone 3G and one iPhone 2G, and my daughter would like to have one as an iPod Touch to supplement her iPod Nano. I'd prefer to giver her the 2G unless there are good reasons for her to have the 3G.

  • Answer:

The iPhone 3G hardware and software are better than the iPhone 2G's. If she's just going to use it as an iPod, it doesn't make much difference, but if she's going to have apps on it, the iPhone 3G would definitely be snappier. Unless you use your iPhone 3G, I think it would be a better idea to give her the 3G. If you had a 1982 and a 1998 Ford Tempo in your garage that you're not using, wouldn't you give her the newer one?

Other answers

One simple answer is that the original iPhone is not supported in the most recent iOS 4 software update (the 3G is.) More specifically the 3G does contain (slightly) beefier hardware, so you should see better performance with that device. The only other consideration really would be form factor- the 3G is slightly bulkier, but does not have the recessed headphone jack of the orignal iPhone, which made it incompatible with some headphones.
