How do I convert optical S/PDIF output to a 5.1 channel?

i have a set top box which has following outputs..stereo L and R audio output,video output, hdmi output,optical output,and one lan port...the set top box supports hd channels with dolby sound...i have a 5.1 home theater system which has 6 ports for each channel(2 front, 2 rear,1 woofer,1 centre)...it also has 2 ports for aux(L and R analog input)...now in order to get 5.1 sound what should be the best option..also i want to play movies(movies are in my pendrive) using that home theatre, for that i should buy a dvd player with 5.1 channels?? plzz help me i am freaking out!! right now i have connected the two analog L and R to the aux of the speaker...but it is giving pseudo surround sound not true...so what could be the best option....the hdmi cable is connected to my led !!

Your problem is that the only 5.1 outputs you have (optical, HDMI) are in digital format but there is no digital input on your budget stereo. To do what you want you need an outboard 5.1 converter. This will take the optical or coaxial digital output from your set-top box and output the five discrete analog audio channels. These are typically available on eBay for around $50US. Here's a picture of one currently listed: Honestly, however, you are probably better off saving your money towards a better stereo with integrated digital audio; for a budget stereo the difference between the matrix surround you are now getting and "true" 5.1 is probably not meaningful.

It is time to buy a new home theater. What you have is really old. There are no more DVD or BD players with 6 distinct audio outs and it will cost you more to buy a s/pdif or HDMI to analog audio converter. Depending on what you buy, you may be able to keep your speakers.
