What is the connection between tuberculosis and "tuberculoid leprosy"?
-
Tuberculosis and leprosy are caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium leprae, respectively. Leprosy is classified based on a patient's symptoms as "lepromatous leprosy" and "tuberculoid leprosy"...are both of these forms caused by M. leprae? Where does "tuberculoid" come from in the name?
-
Answer:
None, be it that the causative organisms are related: and that in the skin lesion of tuberculous leprosy we see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Granuloma which reminds us of tuberculosis although there is no central necrosis (dead tissue) like in tuberculosis.
