I always recommend the Suzuki SV650. It's a good looking bike with plenty of power, a great center of gravity and all at a really good price. Parts are cheap so when you drop it, there's not much to worry about replacing the mirror or peg or whatever it ends up being.

The Kawasaki Ninja 500 has always been a good starter bike with a sporty flair. Keep in mind that a true sport bike will by nature be a bad choice for a beginner. However, most beginners will get a big thrill out of pretty much any motorcycle.

you can always go for KTM390, which is an excellent bike austrian engine, single solid frame, with great performance, it will be good on you budget and you will get everything you expect out of it.
