Why was Indian National Army formed?

Why is the Indian army not audited like the rest of the government's departments (despite its reputation for internal corruption)?

  • Indian army or rather armed forces gets a majority stack of India's annual budget. Why unlike other government concerns, the army is not audited or checked for financial loopholes. Despite of a lot of corruption stories within the armed forces. A civil service officer does corruption, he's tried and punished then why not civil courts try an army officer for corruption. Ultimately they are government employees too. There are army's internal audit in place, but it can be anyone's guess that their findings would be highly controlled. Army spends so much taxpayer's money in providing its officers a super-lavish lifestyle, which is unnecessary and it should take some austerity measures. Why are we still following the same british raj era customs and justify it when it comes to army? Why spend so much of taxpayer's money on their lifestyle expenses? P.S: Please don't give reason like they are there risking their life for country and so they should be exempted from audits.

  • Answer:

The army IS audited. That's what you have offices of the LAO(Local Accounts Officer) for. An audit is conducted every year for all the units in the army and all formation headquarters. While in peace locations the audit is done by qualified account officers, in field locations (where there is fighting involved or remote places) the audit is done by the army itself because nobody is ready to come to such places from the civil departments.
