What is a labour-saving device?

When I plug a device into a router (or a network switch), what does the router learn about my device?

  • The router probably learns about my device's MAC address, but what else? Can it tell the difference between an end-device like a laptop and another router?

  • Answer:

Please, consider that router is a minicomputer system. designed to do some specific task, like communicating with a modem and sharing communication without any wires.  Whenever you plug any device into a router, it learns everything from the device, for example its ID, its Serial Number, its MAC address,  and if it contains any data.

depends on what your router is configured to do.. So for example,.. if you have a Cisco Router and is configured with something like a "Netflow" feature.. your router will be able to learn what kind of traffic you are sending.. as another example.. say the router has the firewall feature configured( ZBF in case of Cisco routers).. it will be able to log most data which a full blown Firewall can log... hope this helps...
