Where can I get moving boxes for free (or for cheap)?

I'm in Mountain View, moving up to San Francisco.

Answer:
I just faced this issue. I found boxes at: Safeway - go after midnight because that's when they are re-stocking the shelves and have LOTS of boxes sitting around that they'll give you. I went to the one on El Camino in Menlo Park, near Stanford. Other grocery stores do this too, so you should call them and ask. UHaul - they have a give one, get one box that often has boxes. I found boxes at the UHaul in Redwood City, near Woodside Rd. Twitter/Facebook - blast out to your friends and invariably someone will have boxes they are looking to throw out anyway. I was able to get about 20 boxes this way and have a very efficient and organized move.

Liquor stores get tones of boxes they are willing to give away.

Craigist and eBay classifieds - these are commonly listed items since they are typically difficult to dispose of... And many folks get there boxes this way and like to continue the (re)cycle.

You can usually find free boxes at grocery stores however I would advise against these as you never know what creepy crawlers are hiding inside. A better option would be to go to a department store and see if they have any boxes that clothing or office products were shipped in as this would likely be more sanitary than boxes which contained food items. The best thing to do is find a source for low cost moving boxes such as a moving company and purchase boxes from them at a reasonable rate. The advantages of doing this are that you get sturdy, sanitary boxes. Also the uniform size of boxes purchased specifically for your move will make the boxes easier to stack which means less time loading the truck. This is especially important when you hire professional movers since time is money. Finally, with boxes purchased specifically for the move, you can get boxes for a specific function such as wardrobe boxes to hang your clothing in, picture boxes, or dish packs.

In addition to the above, Freecycle is a good resource. We were able to move a 2BR apartment without having to spend money on boxes.

I agree with Sammie Thach. You need to be careful when you get used cardboard boxes. You don't know what fluids and bugs may have been all over those. Your best bet is a office building that has paper boxes. Those usually make great moving boxes. The only problem is their size is limited. You may want to see if their is a box company like Smart Moving Box in your area. This is especially good for single moms who don't have time to round up moving boxes. They will deliver right to your home. http://smartmovingbox.com
