How can I create my own hosted svn server?

Where do we find good documentation to create your own repo server (preferably git or svn)?

  • Answer:

For SVN, your best bet is the SVN book (http://svnbook.red-bean.com/).  Has lots of good information.  For Git, your best options are Gitosis and Gitolite.  Scott Chacon has information on both in Pro Git and I cover Gitosis setup very thoroughly in Pragmatic Version Control using Git. One thing to ask yourself though is whether or not you need to maintain the servers yourself.  From a learning perspective it's great, but there's a certain amount of overhead that comes with running your own setup.  There are many hosting providers that can give you excellent service and they take away the headache of keeping the servers up-to-date and your repositories backed up. I've personally done both and prefer letting someone else manage the servers for me.  One less thing I have to keep track of.
