Is Adobe Air still actively supported?

Who is going to be the winner on smartphones, Adobe AIR or Flash? And Why?

  • There are confusing messages in the news about whether Adobe is focusing its attention to making Adobe AIR the ubiquitous flash platform on all smartphones or whether they will keep trying to push for Full Flash support. As an application/game developer, should I be focusing on Adobe AIR or Full Flash? Which will give me better reach, better monetization options, better flexibility and better app performance?

  • Answer:

I honestly don't think either of these represent a viable long-term "platform" to build mobile apps/games/content on. The main reason is that thr performance of Flash/Flex just isn't good enough. Combine this with the fact that these runtimes were designed for mouse/keyboard interfaces with the concepts of Touch bolted on later on. These runtimes don't give you monetization, the Top monetization options are native (app purchases, in-app purchases) and ads. Don't expect to develop an app one time and get high-performance, resolution independence, unified monetization, unified input management on a large variety of mobile devices. I would argue that your best et at this time is actually corona, a (new) platform built from the ground up to run on iOS/Android. It was actually created by some ex-Adobe guys.
