What are some reasons someone want to be a waitress?
-
I am wondering because the only reason I want to transition out of customer service to being a waitress is for the tips... In manhattan you can sometimes make up to 6 figures. I have an interview this week and I think this question will come up and I do not think it is great to say for the money only.

Answer:
Many people who work in the service industry do so because they like the hours. People are "night owls," for example. Further, many servers enjoy the camaraderie of the service industry; they are passionate about food and beverage; and they are often looking for a flexible schedule. My advise to you would be to focus on a passion for food and beverage - if you have one - and to talk up your flexibility in scheduling. Now, that being said, there are down sides to the service industry. Most servers receive no benefits from their employer, and the pay is often pretty low. This next thing I'm going to say may sound harsh, but you need to hear it. It is true that servers in Manhattan can earn six figures, but it takes a long time to get to that level, and a person who needs to ask why a person would want to be a waitress should not have expectations of earning those kinds of wages. Servers who earn six figures are typically people who have been in the industry for a long time; consider it to be a profession that they have devoted their life to in the same was any professional would; are expertly knowledgable of food; and work at restaurants that are some of the best in the world.

I like it that I keep moving. Sitting still is very tiring. I love the interaction with guests. I love working with other "people" people. Lots of love tends to flow around unless you are somewhere with bad morale. I'm an extrovert, great job for an extrovert. I like working 30 not 40 hours. Lots of people like having cash all the time.

My main reason for being a waitress is that I have more flexibility with my schedule. I am a full time student which makes it really hard to work a 9â5 job, but I also need a job where I can work less than 40 hours a week and still make enough to pay my bills. Serving is a great job for the most part, and if you do put the effort in, you can make really good money. For the most part, managers are also really good about following your availability and not scheduling you for more shifts than you want. Staff at restaurants are also very close usually. I see more of my work family than I do my parents or my friends because we are always at work. Some of my closest friends have been people I worked with. But if you are a new server, no matter where you live, you will not be making 6 figures for a while. No high end restaurant that has servers making that much, is going to hire someone who has no experience as a waitress. The reason servers can make that much is because they are the best of the best, they have worked their way up, and have years of experience. You are more likely to be hired in sports bar, family restaurant, or mom and pop place than anywhere else. So if you are expecting to be making $100,000 your first year as a waitress, you are mistaken. If that is the only reason why you want to be a server, you may want to look into other jobs.
