Which Creative Commons license permits free non-commercial but paid commercial use?

  • It should be available for commercial purpose. I would like my photos to be free for non-commercial (NGOs, etc) and private people but to be ready to be sold for business if they plan to use it commercially.

    If (1) these are your photos and (2) you want your photos to be free for non-commercial use but to be sold for commercial use: Under no circumstances do you want to remove the non-commercial (NC) part of the Creative Commons license. An attribution (BY), attribution-noderivs (BY-ND), or attribution-sharealike (BY-SA) license means that the photo can freely be used for commercial purposes, i.e., you don't get paid. A non-commercial CC license with means that for commercial purposes the CC license does not apply, regular rules are in effect, and they have to pay up. So you want BY-NC, BY-NC-SA, or BY-NC-ND.

If you mean for you to use, the you are primarily looking at the Attribution variant of the license and the Attribution share-a-like. If you are looking to allow people to use, including commercially, then the Attribution variant, Attribution share-a-like and the Attribution-NoDerivs, depending on your specific needs.

Any CC license that does *not* include the words "non-commercial" or the initials "NC" in its name is appropriate for commercial use. Just keep an eye on the other conditions. Few businesses, I would imagine, are interested in the "share-alike" license.
