Can I earn money from home?

I am an Indian citizen currently living in the US. Can I move back to India and still hold a source of income in the US such that I earn money in US $? What ways can you think of which is a win win situation where we can head back to our home land and still earn money in the US salary range?

  • I can think of investment in stocks, real estate. Also is working as a consultant for a US company from India feasible? In any case If I ever decide to move back to the US I need enough savings to live a decent life in the US, that Is the idea behind this train of thought.

  • Answer:

What a coincidence! I'm leaving London and moving back to India now. I was bored sitting in the lounge (even I was surprised with my puntuality). I opened quora and find this question waiting for me. Ok let me try to answer you. Indians will usually prefer to earn in USA and invest in India but your plan made me curious. Though you have lot of options to earn in dollars from India, I'll strongly suggest you to reconsider. Because everything depends on how soon and how much you can handle if something goes wrong. For example, market crash in US can spoil your hard earned money and you will need a cushion to fall back on. Either you need to be in US to look after your money or have someone you trust (I'll prefer immediate blood relation - my father does it for me) look after. This way you can take immediate action when ever you want. For your job options, freelancing is a best option. There are lot of sites that allow you to do this. I'm not sure which industry you are working but if you're in IT I know for sure that this is possible. You have other options like blogging but it depends totally on your individual preferences and skills. I've a flight to catch now. I'll add more information once I reach my destination. Edit 1: It took me more time than I anticipated to settle down due to personal reasons. Here is the rest of my answer. 1. If you are good at investing and has enough knowledge, you can invest in Indian and American markets in parts. Again I'm saying, you need enough knowledge and not even a fraction less than that. If you are not sure, please ignore this. 2. If you are in IT, based on your skill set, you can do freelancing through websites or consulting firms. I'm not including any other option as I do not have enough information about yourself. Edit 2: One good website offering freelance jobs: https://www.upwork.com/

Why do you want to move to India? You won't get US quality of life here, at least not without paying 10-15 times more. May be some company can hire you to work remotely from India. You need to look for startups which can help you with that. Though India will be interesting now as it turns capitalist. :D
