My auntie swallowed a fish bone what should she do?

I swallowed a fish bone. What do I do now?

  • I don't know if it is lodged in my throat, or what I'm feeling is the scratch from the fish bone. I drank water and ate a lot of bread, rice, etc to push the bone down, but I still have the feeling that something is there. I read online that what I'm feeling could just be a scratch from the bone going down. I would prefer not to go to the doctor's office. Is this a big deal? The pain level is low. And if the fish bone did go down my throat successfully, will it puncture my stomach?

  • Answer:

It is entirely possible that the sensation you can feel is due to localised tissue damage in the throat. However, there is a possibility that the bone is embedded in the soft tissues of the throat. The only way to tell for sure is to be evaluated by a medical professional. If you attended our department, you would probably have a soft tissue x ray of the neck, if a radio translucent foreign body (the fish bone) was demonstrated, it is a simple job to remove it. It is unlikely that the small fish bone would completely perforate the oesophagus but there is a possibility, if the bone remains, so will the pain and there is a theoretical risk of infection. I would urge you to get this checked in a face to face consultation as advice given over the Internet, is just that, advice.

Like most lay people I too would first try to swallow a ball of rice or a piece of bread - without crust - whole to "sweep" the fish bone away.  Failing that, I would see a doc who can try to look deep into the throat  and using pincers remove the fish bone if it can be found.  In some that would necessitate general anesthesia and close inspection of the throat using a fiberoptic instrument the nasopharyngoscope by an ENT doc. Many people feeling something is stuck in their throat on inspection have no  fish bone in their throat, most probably a scratch so they keep feeling  something is there.  This usually will go away by itself after a good night's sleep. It might be a good idea to first search Quora for answers to the question before posing a new one yourself, there already is exactly the same question on Quora

I had a similar experience about 15 years ago, and remember the experience very clearly.  Like you, I tried everything I could think of to get it either up or down.  Rice, bagel, bread, water, and every other recommendation others were willing to offer.  Nothng worked.  It was stuck.   I was worried the bone might start cutting up my insides, but people said the stomach acids would dissolve them.   For me, it was a little more than mildly irritating.  I wasn't in pain, but it was clear to me, this wasn't going to go away.  I finally went to the doctor to have it removed.  Wasn't so bad.  I heard the "open wide," as expected.  He shined a light and said "I see it."  He reached in with a long instrument and pulled it out.  It was pretty big, maybe a little over an inch.  It was lodged sideways, which was the reason I couldn't get it up or down.  After the bone was removed, I was relieved.   Go see a doctor if it is stuck. Takes a few minutes and is painless.   I tend to be very careful when I eat this type of fish these days, needless to say.

First of all, it surely is not a big deal. Secondly, it wont puncture your stomach. Thirdly, try to swallow rice, do not chew it ( make it into a paste then swallow it, chances are it will take the bone along with it while going down).

Eat a chappati without any curry or vegetable. Try not to chew the chappati too mutch, it should be chewed enough so that you can swallow it.
