How heavily would you weigh the fit with your new boss when considering a new job?
-
There are a number of resources available to help job seekers find new opportunities: 1. Job posting sites like Monster 2. Career advice sites like WSJ 3. Company description sites like Glassdoor 4. Networking sites like LinkedIn My question is whether there is a need for another kind of resource to help determine the quality of fit between the job seeker and the hiring manager. I would love to hear your thoughts.

Answer:
It's becoming a bigger and bigger factor for me. With more than 12 bosses in one form or another since I was 14 (I'm now 28), I've had enough bad bosses and I've learned that life is too short to spend your time working for a bad boss. An incompetent boss is more tolerable. That being said, I believe that my next jump will probably be founding my own company. However, working for a good boss is great and I wouldn't deny that option if it came along. What's a good boss? A good boss is a coach, a teacher and someone who creates condition where it is possible to do great work. That's what you should seek to discover in your next interview.

Always check http://Glassdoor.com.com and google the company, your potential boss, etc. Sometimes you can't find anything because the company is too small, too young, or people that have worked for your potential boss just haven't put anything online. In all cases, check references. Go on Linkedin and message a few people that used to work for the company. You can even ask your potential boss for references. If they're checking your references, you should be checking theirs.

This question of 'fit' has been the recent subject of a LinkedIn poll here http://linkd.in/dQWQMc and has generated some interesting comments about the use of a resource (Such as a questionnaire in this case) to determine 'fit'
