How many businesses are there in Columbus?

What are the most famous/popular local products and businesses in Columbus?

  • Answer:

Everyone is going to say Jeni's ice cream, which is fantastic, but awfully expensive for most of us, who don't make all that much money. (Duh: we live in Columbus! With money, we'd live somewhere else, at least half the year!) Other obvious answers are Buckeyes (the candy), Katzinger's (the awesome deli the presidents all visit, beer (too many great local ones to list w/o a separate Quora question), and "[insert anything, including buttersticks] deep-fried at the Ohio State Fair." So I'm going with Johnny Marzetti. If you really are from Columbus, your mom made this. And you ate it. And even though you moved away, you came back and maybe even would still eat it. Look up what it is on your own. Nah, actually, maybe don't bother. Just go to Jeni's.

I'm not completely sure what you mean by local products, but I'll try and name some things Columbus is known for.  Columbus has many retail and corporate headquarters.  Limited Brands, Inc, Wendy's and Nationwide Insurance are three of the biggest ones.  In terms of local products, one of our most famous exports is Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams.  Columbus is also home to several high-quality microbreweries and one fantastic local meadery.  Some of our landmark eateries are Schmidt's German restaurant and Thurman's bar, but Columbus has a huge and diverse and amazingly vibrant dining and food scene - those are just the ones that tend to make the guidebooks.  One of the things Cbus is most famous for is our zoo - the Columbus Zoo is one of the best zoos in the world and Director Emeritus Jack Hanna is one of our celebrity residents.

In the past few years, it has been Jeni's Ice Cream.

Some time back, a local radio station paid a researcher to discover whether there was a dish that was created in Columbus.  The result?  Not chocolate buckeyes; they were invented in Indiana.  War su gai.  It's not an authentic Chinese dish.  It was invented here. Businesses?  Longaberger Baskets.  Even the factory looks like a giant basket.

Schmidt's Bahama Mamma, the cream puffs are also legendary. Pistacia Vera macaroons. Buckeye Doughnuts. Sugardaddy's brownies. Brothers Drake Mead. OYO Vodka. Watershed Gin. I'm a fan of Pure Imagination Chocolatier.
