Can I implement a Service into an app?

What apps should be there in IIT, Bombay's Android app suite?

  • We are planning to build an Android app suite for IIT Bombay. Here are the apps we are thinking to implement as of now. Please help us to prioritize. a) Profile App : Generic information about IIT System, all IIT's, History of IIT Bombay and latest news about IITB. Mainly targeted towards prospective students and curious onlookers. b) Admissions App : [BTech]About IIT Jee Mains & Advanced. [MTech] GATE [MBA] JAM. Mainly targeted towards prospective students. c) Alumni App : A forum to increase the interaction between Alumni. Ability to find Alumni living in same place.Mainly targeted towards Alumni. d) Placements News, Notice Board, Library, Clubs & Assocs,Departments, Hostels, Magazines and Periodicals apps are mainly targeted towards Oncampus students. e) Academic & Cultural festivals app are for on campus students and for visitors to know the schedule and venues. f) Student Self Service app is for oncampus students to check their dues and apply for certificates. g) Freshman Orientation app is for new joinees. h) A reminder service which will alarm you before a class based on your time table. i ) Past year question papers, lecture slides & assignments. i.e a course page kind of thing. What more features should be there in this app suite ? EDIT 1 : editable usage line for academic and cultural festival app because somebody felt the old text [app is to impress sponsors] is shockingly awful. We accept our mistake and removed that text now.  Thanks IMP EDIT 2: Since somebody proved once again that majority of Indians are dumb enough to not know what language to use in professional discussion, I request all to not to hijack the discussion with irrelevant & irresponsible answers. If if you this question is stupid, I accept my stupidity. If our a2a requests caused trouble to you our apologies. We are looking for meaningful discussion here.

The main objective for such an app, in my perspective, should be to provide succinct, reliable and necessary information on the go. Now of all the options that you have mentioned you should concentrate on the ones people are more likely to access/need via a mobile app rather than from a computer. Putting everything in one place makes using the app cumbersome. Most of the things mentioned are already on the insti website. Things like an app for the insti bus service and real time positioning of buses are more useful than providing last year questions (they can be accessed from the laptop and most of them are already shared on LAN, you just need to organize them well). IIT Madras has an app for the exact same thing and it worked excellently initially but after the student team that developed it graduated, it has stopped working. No idea why. Majority of the people using the app would be on campus students. So tailoring the app around them should be the best approach. As mentioned notifications for hobby club meetings/sessions, mess regd, class timetable, interhostel match schedules, lectures by eminent personalities etc can be added as most of us dont bother to read the insti emails or forget the timings/venues. Regarding app for fests, I think we already separate apps have for both major fests of the year. And its better not to integrate them with the insti app as they are changed/revamped every year only to be made as bad as the previous one. Adding a complaint portal will be very helpful. This can include everything from fixing hostel room fan/light to complaint of irregular  bus service or mess food etc. My view on putting alumni, lecture slides, freshman orientation, admissions etc is that its is easier to access them via my laptop from the comfort of my room rather than on a mobile and they are not urgent information that any one is likely to need on the go.

Thanks for the A2A. I think you should prioritize the course page app because that will help a lot in reducing the tension the students face right before exams.

An app for registering complaints would really be helpful.

I am not sure about the mess facility at IIT Bombay. If there are multiple mess, then there could be an app to register, change and view their mess settings.

I would like to suggest a safety app as well. I am sure that the IIT administration takes care about the safety of students but an app can come in handy in 'unwelcome' situations. The app that I am talking about is 'Pukar' - an emergency safety app. Hope this helps! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pukar&hl=en

Thanks for A2A. While all of the above mentioned apps should be made, following points may be kept in mind while prioritizing: Impact - which app makes life easier and for how many people. You can take a vote instead of suggestions. Dev time - do not take an app which takes months to develop. Think MVP. Usage time - useful for day to day work or is used only one time in a year i.e. admission time. New App Suggestion and Improvements: Industry Project App - an app using which companies can post small projects (commercial / research / learning) for IITians or students as a whole. Students can join for a stipend / free based on what is / who offered. Will also help in finding good internships. Info on challenges like MS Imagine Cup and internships like GSoC must be added. Why I think so ? I am working on a problem but don't have time and I would prefer it to be done by a student than by freelancing company. as it may help me in getting our next employee. Reminder Service - IMHO it should be a generic one and not specific to time table. Any Event or personal item may be added. and based on SMS rather than Notification. (From GF's Birthday to Parent's Anniversary.) Freshman Orientation App may be enhanced to add information on required items for a new student. For e.g. a guy from Bihar joined IIT Bombay and just after 10 days he gets to know he needs a laptop. I know he can buy in Mumbai but if he knew it earlier he could have bought from native place and saved time. Point i - past year question papers ... I would suggest a place where everyone can vote on most difficult topic. Now if a student group covers 2-3 topics in a month by adding easy to understand material on this app/portal, we will get better IITians (err.. I mean even better ones.) Disclaimer: I am not an IITian so the things I mentioned may not be even relevant to all of you.
