Is a college major in International Studies the same as International Business?

Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) v/s Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies(CBS). Which one should I chose?

  • Answer:

If you are looking to build a personality, take presentations, do real internships, travel for competitions, learn through the year with regular classes, zero du politics, learn how to survive in competition, become a better talker, pick CBS Srcc will stay with you as a brand forever, look really fancy on your resume too...The 'not as popular' name of cbs might hurt at times! And for the answer above, placements are much better at srcc, although cbs is pretty good with them too!

SRCC will make you product with good brand and attractive packaging. Surely you'll be placed with lucrative packages but may deprive of hunger to strive in this competitive world. SRCC doesn't guarantee you success but proffers a launch pad for your career. To be successful in world of corporates, you need to harness your skills persistently which CBS aims to instill in you. As per last year placement records, students of SSCBS exceeded those who got placed in SRCC with an average package of 10 lacs p.a. To encapsulate the entire space, my vote is for CBS!

As biased as it may be SSCBS makes for a better choice. 1. It's a brand in itself. One that those who are aware of hold in regard and put it in the same league as any other college including SRCC. 2. The course is more rigorous and covers a greater number of concepts than B.Com Hons or an Eco Hons. 3. The large number of extra curricular activities at SSCBS force you to strike the ultimate balance between academics and extra  curriculars. 4. Everyone is crazy ass competitive and you are always in a race to outdo the other person. In the greater scheme of things this will ensure that you don't screw up later on in life. 5. The three years at SSCBS allow you to explore a large number of things which if you really think about it is what you are ideally supposed to do in college. Since you end up meeting people from all walks of life there is going to be an artist, a musician, the nerd, the guy who wants to go to harvard and the person who wants to expand his family business all in the same class.

Anyone who answers this question would always be biased on one account or the other. You be blessed to choose between the two.  Kids from CBS are generally smarter but then I have seen enough smart people from srcc as well.  Life in CBS is far more gruelling than srcc.  That's certain. You would always question yourself as to why you chose this Shabby building over the glamor of campus but trust me the empathy in misery that u would share with your friends would be forever.  I don't think the kind of pride I exhibit telling people I am from CBS is any less than me telling them that am from an IIM as well.  Those who know about it are reassuring but be warned those who don't know about it look at you as if you couldn't even crack deshbandhu evening.  The kind of places people have been to is far more diversified after CBS than after srcc.  Smaller batch.  Opportunities are more.  Faculty,  some of it,  is beyond brilliant.

It's easy to dismiss SRCC as 'just a brand'. I'll let you ponder over a simple fact before you decide which is better: If students at CBS really are better considering they go through an entrance exam, why is it that most of the top ranked students at the BBS/BFIA/BBE entrance exam end up studying at SRCC? I was AIR 15 at the entrance, even AIR 2 studies at SRCC (from my year). So in terms of peer group, CBS isn't beating SRCC any time soon.Someone pointed out that the level of competition and extra curriculars are stronger at CBS. Though I don't doubt what CBSites are capable of, I can without a doubt say that SRCC is one of the most competitive places in India. You'll find most IPCC toppers of India here, about a dozen people got a call from IIMA this year, every single person interns in their first and second years. Some intern more than once in the same year too. You'll always find a group of students discussing colleges for further studies, internships, start up ideas or the news. And also, saying SRCC had 12/1000 students get a call from IIMA and CBS had 12/300 is a very unfair comparison. CBS being a management college would naturally have more people applying for the  IIMs. A LOT of us go into CA and actuarials for instance. So definitely not everyone is trying to get into IIMs and that high denominator is simply misleading. Regarding extra cirriculars, though there is no way to verify this, I'll be extremely surprised if any other UG college in India, let alone CBS has the number of student run societies as SRCC does. In our even semesters, we have a fest literally each day, by one society or the other. You'll find a competition running almost any time you want to participate in one. There is a big personality every other week that comes into college. From politicians to corporate biggies, from bands to every big comedian that you see on YouTube. All these events are organised by students with complete independent charge. And I haven't even talked about Crossroads yet. A number of us have our own start ups, blogs and YouTube channels. One of the start up founders even made it to the Forbes 30 under 30 (Asia) list this year. One of the girls from SRCC is currently in the final 20 of Femina Miss India 2016. In terms of Infrastructure and college life, there is no question of comparing North Campus with East Delhi. We have technology enables classrooms and libraries, a sports ground that was built for the CWG games and airconditioners at every place.  We don't have an ECA quota and that's why other DU colleges do better than us at some of the cultural competitions. Still we have one of the most acclaimed dramatics society of DU, our debating societies and music societies have won all around DU.In terms of recognition, SRCC is much much more recognised than CBS. Though, I regard CBS in a very high light, most people outside Delhi don't know of CBS or even the course BBS for that matter. It is perhaps because of this that we get the diversity of students that we do. We have students from all parts of India, some from even outside India. The exposure you get from this diversity is significant. There is a reason why MBA colleges stress upon diversity so much. You understand the reason for it once you come here. Most of the professors at SRCC are some of the most reputed and experienced in DU. You'll find that most of the books that BCom Hons students across DU study from are written by profs from SRCC, many of whom are current profs. I can go on and on with this. But I hope this much will suffice for now. Make an informed decision. I had a hard time deciding among CBS, SRCC and IPM from IIMI, I chose SRCC and not a day goes by when I'm not thankful that I made this decision.

Answers to this question, as mentioned by many others, will most definitely be biased on one account or the other. However, I’ll try and mention objective facts to give you a balanced insight.Course - SRCC and CBS offer different courses, all of which are highly competitive and challenging. I would suggest choosing the course you wish to pursue, before thinking about the colleges (Also, your doubts would most probably be cleared up if you have your choice of course clear).SRCC offers Bachelors of Commerce which focuses on basic accounting and finance while CBS offers BMS and BFIA, which are essentially professional courses for a career in management and financial analysis. Compare the syllabus for all these three courses before you decide to pick one, your college confusion might just end at this stage.Brand Name - It is well known that SRCC is amongst the most reputed colleges in Delhi and its almost-100-year old legacy certainly holds an edge over CBS. At the same time, in a period of around 25 years, CBS has created a brand for itself with this competitive course structure and buzzing environment. While a lot of school goers and even university students remain oblivious to CBS, Recruiters and professionals hold CBS students in high regards, which is reflected in the exceptional placement records of the college.Your Love for Challenges - I consider this an important aspect that people often overlook when comparing colleges. While people consider strong brand name a positive (and yes, it certainly is!), it more often than not comes with a slight disadvantage to personal growth. At SRCC, brand name gets you certain things with relative ease. Be it sponsorship for college fests or leverage in social circle, SRCC goes a long way in getting you a headstart. But again, the real challenge, in my opinion, is to not have that benefit and still make a space for yourself. The amount of effort, perseverance and tact involved in trying to convince people with your mettle is something you can only learn in CBS. And that, I think, is one crazy journey of self discovery altogether.Infrastructure - At this moment, undoubtedly, SRCC has the upper hand in terms of infrastructure. Comfortably positioned in the heart of North Campus, it is replete with facilities and amenities. The current building of CBS is an effort to live in, being very honest. While it has taught generations of CBSites to make the best out of nothing, they are more than excited for the new campus building at Rohini which will probably be the best in Delhi University (come January 2017!).I would rather not talk about the level of competitiveness, opportunities and career suitability simply because those are very subjective aspects and depend entirely upon the student’s own goals and efforts. I would suggest you to talk personally to students of both colleges and make an informed choice sans the romanticism associated with both colleges.Oh and, Happy College Life! :D

Thanks for A2A.CBS, batch of 2018. Some bias is inherent.Your choice depends on the field you want to make career in, although many of us are not sure about the exact area where we want to specialize our expertise in.Go for SSCBS only and only if you are hell bent on doing MBA afterwards. By hell bent, I mean you eat, sleep, dream management. From planning and organising events to dealing your way through internals, you will get to know the ABCs of management and a hint of intense rigour required for the success in the corporate world. Since you don’t get everything on the platter here, you are bound to get out of your comfort zone and work your ass off to manage studies and extracurriculars. I doubt any other DU college provides you that level of exposure. As a result of this, kids of CBS are smarter than their peers in other DU colleges. I was quite a shy person when I came to SSCBS but in no time I had developed the confidence to speak in front of 40 students. Also, if you are a self proclaimed finance buff, dreaming for a career in IB or Private Equity, Bfia is best suited for you, which is provided only by SSCBS.For all the rest career choices such as CA, Actuarial Sciences, Civil Services, Economics etc SRCC should be your aim.Placements wise, there is not much difference between the two. While SRCC has the upper hand when it comes to the highest average package, it is SSCBS which takes the cake in terms of percentage of students getting placed. This is because the intensity through which students of SSCBS are prepared over the years makes them perfect recruits for the companies.I don’t know about other events but when it comes to organizing Mockstocks, there is no match for SSCBS. Period.Infrastructure is one thing in which CBS takes a backseat, although from January 2017, it is expected to shift to its facility rich campus in Rohini. Still, SRCC scores in this aspect.Hope it helps.

BFIA is a very finance oriented course and gives you greater perspective and practical knowledge about the field. BMS is like a toddler version of MBA where you are groomed to become an excellent management student. Quite a few of BMS and BFIA students make it to top B- schools in India.Coming to http://B.Com (H), the course structure is a little redundant , less challenging and out of date. At least the 3 year undergraduate course. Maybe they have tried to change the dynamics by introducing multiple subject option under the Credit Based System but I am not too sure. However when you say B.Com(H) from SRCC, SRCC holds a greater weightage than the course to be honest. The qualities you learn in SRCC go way beyond the academics course. The tough competition in various co-_curricular activities encourages you to perform better. There are so many talented people who are given the required platform to showcase their talent in the college which enhances their possibilities in so many different ways. Be it the drama society, the music, financial literacy societies or any other social initiatives, the college makes sure a student finds atleast 1 thing which interests him beyond books. In fact during the first 3–4 months of joining the college, you would see first years giving interviews for admission in various societies. Imagine the exposure even if it is at such a small scale!Maybe all that I mentioned above is also present at Shahid Sukhdev but I can guarantee that this level of exposures and opportunities are not offered by any other college. You can form your own societies, organise national level fests, run for college elections and still manage to score good marks like a boss!I might be biased towards my own college. Who would not be? :P We have a good number of students getting into the best B-schools in India and abroad, get a chance to incubate their startup! What more can you ask from a college?Personally, I don't really like http://B.Com (H) as much as I like http://B.com (H) from SRCC! I have heard the curriculum of BFIA and BMS are pretty updated and not just textual mugging up like we do in http://B.Com. If you want to study something fresh and management or finance specialist course, go for BMS but is it worth leaving out the overall learning opportunity at SRCC? I wouldn't do if it were me. Rest you would know it better.PS- I know a lot of people in college who left Shaheed Sukhdev for SRCC and are quite happy with the decision.

HiWhile you are at it and I can see you keeping your options of all the ‘brand names’, I would suggest you to go through the BMS programme offered at http://snu.edu.in under http://snuadmissions.com/sme.phpTrust me you won’t be dissapointed. It is time to move over DU colleges.P.S. - No OffenceTo Anyone.

Thanks for the A2A.Well, honestly its a very tough choice. Please try and talk to seniors are people you know from both of these colleges to get an idea.Sukhdev is no doubt a brilliant college and I have seen my friends choose it over SRCC. But you cannot dismiss SRCC as just a brand because being in company of literally the best students (marks wise) develops you as a person and your way towards life and achieving goals.Srcc houses the first startup community/club in DU and well, that is saying something. The whole college clubs are run fantastically by students and the place just flows with good vibes.Again, check with sukhdev students too coz I have a deep respect for them and they are one of the best commerce colleges our university has.
