What Technology Is Used In Mechanical Engineering?

I did my bachelor's of technology in civil engineering from a reputed college of India. How do I go about learning about Aeronautics - Astronautics, e.g. structural aspects, composite materials used and avionics?

  • Answer:

I'd agree with the suggestion, "Read books", and would also add "Surf round related articles on Wikipedia".   Then, on your CV (resume) you can put "Aeronautics and Astronautics, self-study" or whatever phrase you prefer along those lines.   Whenever a prospective employer sees that you claim to be knowledgeable in "XYZ" on your CV, he/she is faced with the problem of being sure that this is true (as opposed to a lie, or just niaive exageration). If your study of XYZ is backed up by a diploma from an accredited university, the prospective employer can take your claim on trust. If your study of XYZ is from a non-accredited university, or self-study, then there is a potential risk, that simply has to be tested by questions at the interview, and a probationary period of any contract that is eventually offered.   So, go ahead, and study whatever takes your fancy. Your potential employers will recognise your worth at the end of it, one way or another.

I did my enginnering in computer science and do programming for a living.  I love mechanical engineering and architecture. I intend to study them both properly and become a professional in the subject.  What is my advise to you? Subscribe to good online blogs, magazines, Facebook pages in the subjects so that your interest remains alive and becomes stronger. Discuss the concepts with good engineers who are in the feild to know more and to understand them better. Take membership in local technical library where you can borrow good books on the subject and study them in detail usually at much slower pace when compared to engineers in college. Since you have luxury of time, you can learn the in and out of the topics with emphasis on details and understanding and not on completing the syllabus. If you want  recognition, join a professional body or group. Groups can help you with networking, can get you mentors and guide you. Take an open course (distance education) and clear them to be recognised professionally. Taking a course also helps you in organizing your study, in learning all the concepts you have to. All the best. Donot let anyone else, kill your passion. Just because you are a civil engineer doesn't mean you shouldn't be interested in aeronautics / automobiles / computers. Even the best civil engineer in the world shouldn't kill his/her dreams.
