How do I disable the Facebook share button?

How can we track when someone shares through the Facebook Share (not Like) button?

  • We want to track - 1. How many people click on the Share button on our website? I believe this can be done with Google Analytics. 2. How many people actually share through the Share button? (not everyone who clicks on the Share button, will end up sharing) 3. How many people click on that shared link?

  • Answer:

At http://Friendbuy.com, we offer a sharing tool that measures all sharing activity - sharing rate all the way down to referral conversion.  You can A/B test different copy that is published into newsfeeds to see what impacts performance. Friendbuy offers concurrent A/B testing tools.  You can drill into all of the metrics posed in the question above. 1) Share buttons served divided by share button clicks 2) Share widgets served divided by shares 3) Referral traffic and ensuing conversions (sales, sign ups, etc.) You can use Friendbuy A/B testing tools to conquer any element listed and increase performance from initial engagement with the share button all the way through final conversion event. Here's a ridiculously simple, single variable A/B test that doubled referral traffic conversions: https://www.friendbuy.com/blog/a-simple-ab-test-to-optimize-social-sharing-and-referral-performance/ Cheers.

Some answers for you... 1) You can measure link clicks using Google Analytics event tracking -- simply add a JS onclick event to your href. More details at http://code.google.com/apis/analytics/docs/tracking/eventTrackerGuide.html 2 and 3) Use the Facebook open graph API to measure sharing activity for a specific link, including shares, likes, comments and clicks for specific URLs. Here's any easy way to get FB share stats for any URL. Paste this URL in your browser and add your URL after "urls=": http://api.facebook.com/restserver.php?method=links.getStats&urls=ENTER_URL_HERE

Regarding with your first question, do you mean how many people or how many clicks? because they are totally different, since one visitor can generate many clicks. If you wanna track clicks, then GA event tracking can do, if you wanna track how many people clicked on the button, anyone can give an answer?

Facebook recently rolled out a new version of Insights that shows a TON of new data about domain shares. Eventually we'll be rolling Facebook analytics for your domain into http://PageLever.com, but right now it's just for fan pages.
