What does individual diversity mean?

Within the context of GMOs, what does it mean to "enhance biological diversity"?

  • Biological diversity refers to the variety of life found in nature. In the MIT Technology Review article, "How Scare Tactics on GMO Foods Hurt Everybody" (June 12, 2014), Pamela Ronald lists "enhanced biological diversity" as a benefit of using GMOs, along with reduced food costs, decreased carbon dioxide emissions, and more. What implications does the phrase now have (if any) as a result of GMOs?

  • Answer:

She is arguing that farming GMOs will enable farmers to disturb less forestland because GMO crops cost less to maintain and require less space for cultivation, etc. I disagree with her position because GMOs have demonstrably spread modified genomes http://in%20unexpected%20ways and, unless their spread can be checked in a reliable manner, GMOs are likely to take up more land rather than less. That would tend to reduce biodiversity, not increase it. I would also add that those pushing GMOs have a great business case; so great that, perhaps, it is clouding their judgement. For instance, the (of the 1960s) has shown that horticultural methods, as opposed to laboratory methods, are effective in feeding a growing population. Hence, the alleviation of starvation is not a compelling justification for unchecked GMO proliferation. IMHO, GMOs should be kept in the lab until they are proven as controllable, predictable, and harmless. Personally, I will add that I avoid consuming GMO products whenever possible and I believe other people, no matter how disadvantaged they are, deserve the same choice.
