Have him seen some biography movies of successful people such as "Jobs". He would feel inspired about how these people managed. He would also understand that he is supposed to work hard to be successful. Maybe most important thing here is he should be aware of he can succeed and best whatever he is doing. Therefore, you should give him positive feedbacks all the time rather then criticizing or scolding him. He will soon start to be more self confident. Remember he is a kid and more importantly human. He will have lots of defects for sure. But as a parent you can make him a star no matter what is upto. Focus on his abilities as well and try to sharpen these abilities. Grow him physically and mentally as a best sportsman if he is good at sports. Good luck,

Get him to use his hands as much as he can. He needs to learn its cool and awesome to *make* things. Electronics, clay, food, whatever... its all in the process of building something that didn't exist. Let him come up with a mini-business plan and earn his pocket money. An entitlement mentality is the worst burden parents usually impose on their children. Get him to read. Lots! Period. Help him create a group of kids his own age for some non-sports activity... help him learn the concepts of "Initiative" and "natural leadership". I say non-sports because sports awards disproportionate advantage to physical attributes. Get him to make his own decisions. Sit down with him at the end of the day/week and revie how each decision went. The most successful people are usually those that can take feedback, reflect and course-correct on an auto-pilot mode.

Let him go after what he likes rather then forcing him to do typical engineering or medical field(most indian ideology). This would keep his mind to open to all ideas
