Why doesn't Facebook API allow me to "Like" objects outside of Facebook.com?
-
It would be amazing if I could "Like" a book on Amazon or a movie on Fandango. The psychological hurdle of "Liking" something is much lower then that of "Sharing" something. For example, look at how Twitter vs. Facebook sharing is being used on http://hypem.com It would also provide tremendous intent-value for the 3rd party site. If "Like" where part of the open graph API and I was able to "Like" a jacket, a pair of jeans or a book it would probably be the most valuable parameter in the facebook ad platform, no? For the 3rd party partner site: when I like something it sends it to my stream which drives traffic back to me and maybe facebook would be able to share what product/things people like.

I think you can. Check out http://topicfire.com You can log in to the site with Facebook Connect, and when you vote up a news item, a story gets published back to your feed with you 'liking' the story automatically.

Adaptive Blue's Glue (http://getglue.com/) is very similar to this idea, and connects with Facebook. There are browser addons for Firefox & Chrome and widgets you can add to your own blog.

I believe it is possible to do, if it's liking "content" outside of Facebook but via Facebook Connect. It's something we've been talking about implementing for my current project so I'll report back once we've given it a go.
