What is your stance on Israel?

What benefits could Malaysia gain if it decided to change its political stance with Israel and start trading with Israel?

  • Answer:

The usual things that you get when you have normal diplomatic relations: Selling goods to Israel. Sending Malaysian students to study in Israeli universities. Some of them are highly ranked among the world's universities, for example The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, The Tel-Aviv University and the Technion in Haifa. Some of them have unique programs not offered elsewhere, such as the Neuroscience program in Jerusalem (disclaimer: I have a family member who is a PhD student there). Israelis will be able to participate in conferences in Malaysia and Malaysians will be able to participate in conferences in Israel. Tourism from Israel. Israelis love traveling to the Far East - India, China, Japan, Thailand - and they will appreciate going to another country to find new challenges. Offering connection airports for Israelis flying to Hong Kong, Philippines, Australia, Japan, Bali and other far eastern destination. Turkish airlines are very successful in the last few years with offering Istanbul as a transfer point for Israelis flying to Europe, India and America at competitive prices. Malaysians will be able to come to work in Israel. At least some Israelis will appreciate the chance to hear Malaysian music, read Malaysian books, and watch Malaysian films.

Nothing. Just look at the map it's tiny country and it has not been a good neighbour. So it's surrounded by hostile countries. The only thing that protects the country is the military power of USA. The geopolitics of the world changing rapidly. And there is a movement to isolate Israel. Who wants to e on a drowning ship? Malaysia will gain more benefits if it forge ties with Israel's enemy Iran instead of Israel.

I believe Malaysia has nothing to gain in terms of economic benefits. All the technological advancements made in Israel will likely end up in the hands of American's VC. Whatever Israel sells Malaysia can get them now too, through a third party country. The only downside is the longer time in acquiring it. Nonetheless, the true benefit will come in form of cultural exchange that may change the outlook of anti-Israel sentiments among the Muslims community in Malaysia. As I write this paragraph I cant stop but to ask how nice if Israel and the rest of the Muslim worlds can be allies and trading partners. Wouldn't it be almost a perfect world?
