How do you record sound off the internet?

On a Mac, how can I record audio files as they play directly through the sound card so quality is not lost?

  • I am trying to record a sound file that is being played over the internet and save it, but all the recorders I find (Audacity) record using the Mac microphone, so the sound plays through the speaks and then is recorded off of that, and the quality is poor.  Is there a program out there that fixes this issue?

  • Answer:

Audio Hijack Pro - works a treat and has loads of options (i.e. record system audio, record audio from a particular application, apply effects if desired etc etc)  Free download:  http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijackpro/

I've used Streamripper on Linux to record streams.  There is a Mac version: http://streamripperx.sourceforge.net/.  It records the stream as it comes in and saves it as discrete MP3 (or whatever) files.  Doesn't always work wonderfully because of how some audio is done over the internet, but if it comes in cleanly this program will record it cleanly.  Great for time-shifting internet radio to listen to at work.

Try using an audio-routing application like Soundflower: http://cycling74.com/products/soundflower/ WireTap Studio is another option: http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/
