Did Leonardo DiCaprio deserve an Oscar for the "Best Actor in a Leading Role" during the 86th Academy Awards (2014)?
-
Leonardo DiCaprio was nominated for the Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role in but lost to Matthew McConaughey during 86th Academy Awards which held in March 2, 2014. What is your insight on the fact that Leonardo failed to win an Oscar in 2014, and did he deserve to win despite his numerous nominations before?

Answer:
Academy Awards go to one best work or performance in each category for that given year. It is not a cumulative award of appreciation except for the Lifetime Achievement honor. We won't know if a single person deserves an Oscar or not for a given year, because we cannot say how it impresses the judges relative to the others in the list for the next time's awards. Also, there is no God to decide who deserves it. The Oscars have had a fair share of goof ups in my view, and they're as likely to make as many mistakes, just like Mahatma Gandhi never being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, but Barack Obama getting it when his nation had troops in battle!

Count me in the camp of people who would like to see Leonardo DiCaprio win an Oscar... eventually. But if I were voting for the Best Actor Oscar of 2013, Leonardo DiCaprio wouldn't win. Ranking the nominees, I would place his performance in Wolf of Wall Street in the fourth spot. Chiwetel Ejiofor - 12 Years a Slave Matthew McConaughey - Dallas Buyers Club Bruce Dern - Nebraska Leonardo DiCaprio - The Wolf of Wall Street Christian Bale - American Hustle Ejiofor and McConaughey are in a virtual tie for the win, but I would give the edge to Ejiofor (no pun intended). Both of their performances are career bests. As funny as DiCaprio is in Wolf of Wall Street, Bruce Dern is equally hilarious in Nebraska, though in a much more subdued manner. Not to rub it in, but if I were voting for my personal favorite performances of the year, Leonardo wouldn't be in the top five. My Oscar nominees would be: Chiwetel Ejiofor - 12 Years a Slave Tom Hanks - Captain Phillips Bruce Dern - Nebraska Matthew McConaughey - Dallas Buyers Club Joaquin Phoenix - Her By no means do I dismiss Leonardo's performance. It's far and away the best comedic role of his career. 2013 was just a competitive year in the Best Actor category; let's not forget that Oscar Isaac, Forrest Whitaker and Robert Redford were among the guys who had award-worthy years. Leo will get the trophy someday, but this year will be either Matt or Chiwetel.

Nope, not at all! That said, it'd be naive of me to say Leonardo is a non-deserving actor. Artistic prominence is defined by the finest performance an actor gives in his time, and award or recognition is defined by the most amazing of the finest performances. If you ask me, Matthew McConaughey, Bruce Dern and Chiwetel Ejiofor were far better in terms of acting in their respective movies. Watching Leonardo, it felt like I was re-watching The Great Gatsby! The issue is not that the Academy didn't give him an Oscar but the patronizing of the fact by Leo's fans. Every nominee during the Award deserves an Oscar but one. Leo was good but not great enough.PERIOD. P.S. I'm a huge Leonardo fan but I won't root for him unless I feel he really deserves to win. This year, unfortunately, he didn't!

I think Leonardo DiCaprio has given some excellent performances in his lifetimes and is a great actor. But (ah the great but!) This guy He made me pity him and feel proud of him. I laughed at his antics and then blanched at his desperation. He made me understand and live with the character. and This one His acting was somewhat muted in this film. But it was powerful. His passively defiant expressions, the tormenting way in which he starts singing at the funeral et al. gave me a disturbing glimpse into the life of a slave. Now this one No doubt the story was good and gripping and the acting was excellent. But it just wasn't 'that' kind of an act. I was viewing a riotous parade rather than sharing in the character's life. The academy awards have traditionally been given to performances which make the viewers delve into the lives and perspectives of their characters. And more often than not, there is an added bonus for portraying characters not from the mainstream society. Also, the awards is not given for past performances. So no matter how many tremendous acts you have done, only your latest one is considered. In this light, I don't think Leo deserved the Oscar this year.

i think it was a very rich category this year. i would say that leonardo's performance was terrific and deserving, but mcconaughey had an accumulative effect that tipped him into the winner's circle. leonardo's problem is that he is such a clean actor that he makes his performance look effortless. i look forward to whatever he does next.

The Oscar is an award, of course it's prestigious and so on, but winning or not winning an Oscar doesn't come down to just the performance. Hollywood and Washington DC are similar -- politics, popularity, luck often rule the day -- and the best man doesn't always win. There are many actors who have delivered performances which are worthy of the greatest praise, but who never receive it. It's just how life goes, I suppose.

With movies like Blood Diamond, The Departed and The Aviator in his kitty, whether his portrayal of Jordan Belforte was his best role or not, that is debatable, but after watching all the performance nominated of Oscars this year, I can affirmatively say it belonged to him. Mathew did a fine job in Dallas Buyers Club, but physical transformation can't be the parameter of Oscars. Leo's portrayal of Jordan's sick lifestyle, his madness, his passion and love for what he did was by far the best act of this year.

No. DiCaprio didn't deserve the Oscar simply because Matthew McConaughey was far better than DiCaprio. The media is saying that that was a DiCaprio/McConaughey war. I would say that for that year, it was a DiCaprio/Ejiofor/McConaughey war, which McConaughey was the clear winner. That said, the nominees for Best Actor that year all delivered brilliant performances. The year before wasn't as competitive. Everyone knew the winner would be Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln. The list of nominees of the 86th Oscars was a collection of very fine performances. Yet, despite the brilliant performances by the nominated actors and several other performances which weren't nominated (eg. Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips, Joaquin Phoenix in Her, Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis, etc.), McConaughey's performance was far ahead of the celebrated performances. If I had to describe DiCaprio's performance in a word, I would say attractive. If I had to describe Ejiofor's performance in a word, I would say sensitive. If I had to describe McConaughey's performance in a word, I would say unpredictable. To end this, I will say that film is subjective. It's what you like, and what you don't like. To objectively judge that one film is better than another, or that one performance is better than another is impossible. If you feel that DiCaprio deserved the gold, then don't think otherwise. Know that the Oscars are a celebration of cinema, and that all five nominees (Bale, Dern, DiCaprio, Ejiofor, McConaughey) were celebrated well.
