Would you like to live in a world where there are no trees left?

Imagine that humans have developed the technological means to replace the role of photosynthesis in an artificial manner in order to maintain the right level of oxygen in our environment to avoid running out of oxygen completely in absence of trees. Even then, would you like to live in a world where there are no trees left? The way humans are cutting down trees and destroying the natural world in general, this may not remain such a hypothetical question in near future. I would hate to live in a world totally devoid of trees and vegetation. Although, in such a scenario the humankind could also be nearing its endtime because the destruction of natural world would be almost complete by then. If you think that such a scenario must be avoided, then what do you think we need to do, and with what level of urgency? In my opinion, we should stop mass-production of technology immediately, whether it is mobile phones, automobiles, computers or other gadgets, which is only contributing to our economic progress in the short-term. Instead, we should let the earth be enveloped in its favorite color once gain, green. One thing man tends to forget is that money was created by humans for their convenience and it is not something real to strive for. The real money is natural resources, once they are gone, nothing can replace them.

Would a world without the material form of trees be worth living in? I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me, But only God can make a tree. Joyce Kilmer No point as you literally will not be able to live in a world without trees - not for long that is - as they contribute so much of the oxygen that you breathe. Of more importance, but less visibly so, is that you will die sooner should all the marine algae that produce oxygen die off as predicted due to the acidification of the oceans. Shellfish are already being effected. Apropos of your question: Just how do you think humans will manage to set up a colony on Mars where there are no trees, no oceans with algae but an atmosphere rich in carbon-dioxide...? Out of interest you may like to follow this link where you will see what a difference trees and algae have made Earths atmosphere when once it was similar to Mars and Venus: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Atmosphere_composition.gif

By "no trees" I'm also assuming you mean no plants period, other than those tucked in greenhouses that are necessary for food production. I could live in a world without trees, but a world without any easily accessible or (mostly) natural greenery would be terrifying. Technological progress isn't the problem, not really, I think it's more our mentality towards sustainability. We don't care about the long-term effects of some of our actions on the environment simply because our generation won't see the worst of the effects from said actions, and this makes it easier to turn a blind eye to continue doing what is easy and 'normal'. I agree that the whole idea of economic progress is flawed and needs a serious overhaul, again for reasons of sustainability. People in economics want to see positive growth rates, when what we really should be aiming for is a sustainable plateau. Nothing can keep growing forever with limited inputs/resources.

There are plenty of perfectly livable environments on earth today where there are no trees - because of natural reasons, not man-made deforestration. Some people live above the tree line in the mountains, arctic tundra areas have no trees, and many desrt areas have no trees. Yet, many of these areas are lovely.

Trees are nice, I'd miss them. But assuming we've got some other way to provide oxygen, I guess life would go on and I wouldn't be miserable without them. There are other joys in life. Dogs, chocolate, waterfalls, Pixar movies, etc.

Remove trees and just think for a moment What will happen if earth lost oxygen for 5 seconds ? 1. Every one at beach will immediately get sunburns Reason - Molecular oxygen in the air protects our skin against UV light. 2. The daytime sky will get dark. Reason - Fewer particles to bounce light means dark almost dark sky. 3. Earth's crust will crumble. Reason - Oxygen make up 45% of earth's crust. 4. Everyone's inner ear would explode Reason - Because we would loose about 21% of air pressure. 5. Every building made out of concrete would turn to dust. Reason - Oxygen is an important binder in concrete. NOW, What if the amount of oxygen is doubled ? 1. Paper airplane would fly further 2. We would get better gas mileage 3. We would be happier and more alert. 4. The extra oxygen would will improve our alertness and physical performance .

Yes of course I would like to live in a world without trees. LOL, this is a silly question. Everyone answering it sees trees daily and we are all accustomed to them. You would have to ask people in the future, if there are no trees, do they miss them. I imagine that is akin to asking us "do you like living in world where there are no dinosaurs left".

Well said! To save trees we should all become digital I say. I read this interesting point in this blog post: http://blog.bayt.com/2014/09/five-tips-to-go-green-in-the-mena-workplace/. You should check it out!

Ask Paul Theroux that question. He revisited Africa after several decades away, and was sad to report the absence of many big trees in Uganda and other places.
