Which Flip HD Camera is the Best?

Which video camera is best - ContourROAM or GoPro HD HERO ?

  • Which video camera is best for 'action' sports? In terms of video quality and usability. hmm... This is a good review: http://www.feedthehabit.com/skiing/gopro-hd-vs-vholdr-contour-hd-camera-review-snowsport-focus/ I will stick with the GoPro

  • Answer:

I can only vouch for the GoPro HD. I bought it after reading the Gizmodo review and based on the sample videos on the GoPro website. I'm not a video expert, but the resulting video is bright and clear and the wide angle is very useful. Especially the 60 fps 720p mode is useful for high velocity sports. Usability: the unit is operated using two buttons, which can be done with gloves. They can be pressed under water, too. The menus are minimalist, but I guess the average user will know how to handle this. And if it's set properly you don't need to touch it on the go. (except maybe for upside down view, which was added in the latest firmware) If for some reason, snow gets all over the unit, it will potentially freeze the pins under the buttons. This can be defrosted this with a breath or by keeping it in your armpit. Sound quality is fine, even in the waterproof case. Just don't expect too much. There's no LCD but an external screen can be connected, and there's an LCD (bacpac) expansion coming.. The battery life is OK, but since they're not that expensive, I recommend getting two or even three spare batts, depending on the duration of the trip.

Well, I don't think the review you sited is very good because the Contour has undergone a lot of usability changes since their first model, the ContourHD, which is no longer in production. The top slider it very easy to feel with gloves which position it is in. And if you find sliding a big two inch switch forward/backward difficult to manage, you probably don't have the dexterity to ride a ski lift. I don't think that the option of a 32GB card is going to make a difference, since both units would run of of power before you could record that much. The ContourGPS adds a GPS unit to record your track as you shoot (but only when shooting). With the special player software that comes with it, you can see the track play alongside your video. The best feature of the ContourGPS and Contour+ is that they have Bluetooth. This allows you to double-check your framing and rotate the camera slightly or adjust the mount. You can also change the video settings, exposure, etc. over the Bluetooth. All you need is an iPhone, an Android phone or a tablet with BT. The newest ContourROAM, which replaced the ContourHD is waterproof to one meter (certainly enough for snow or rain!). the GoPro must be placed in a housing to be waterproof (although it does come packaged with this housing). It is still $199. The top end Contour+ is capable of live streaming, but comes with a $499 price tag. You can also connect a mic to this version. GoPro Hero and Hero2 are also good cameras. The Hero2 will shoot at 120fps. You can also buy an accessory that allows wi-fi control and live streaming. You can also mount two GoPro's in a special housing and shoot in 3D. (Playback requires a 3D TV, of course.) GoPro must be used in housing, so it weights 5.9oz, while ContourROAM is waterproof, but only weighs 5.1oz. GoPro outputs MPG4 format, while Contour outputs MOV format. I own a ContourGPS and have been very happy with it. I have a friend that owns a GoPro and he rarely uses it. But when it comes to which is best, we are really splitting hairs and basing preferences off of emotions, rather than specs, because the two are both pretty good at what they do.

The contour HD is designed almost specifically for skiing, it works very well with its goggle mount. The GoPro has better and more versatile mounting options. The Contour isn't waterproof without an additional waterproof housing. The Contour uses a micro SD whereas the GoPro uses a standard SD, so the GoPro can hold a bigger card 32 gig VS. 16 gig. The contour has lasers to assist in aiming the camera. The new version of the contour has GPS for geotagging and the ability to control the camera with your smartphone via bluetooth.

Hero 3 black edition. Before the hero3 I had to choose between a hero2 and a contourHD. I decided to buy the Contour because of the big switch. When the Hero3 came I decide to buy the hero 3 because of the remote, weight and the mount possibilities. https://nielssie.quora.com/my-experiences-with-the-GoPro-Hero-3

We have had the best experience with the GoPro. battery life, image quality, easy to use. With the new Hero3 model it even got better. http://www.persuader.nl
