Where To Get Online Data Mining Work?

For someone with basic data mining skills, what is the best way to get deeper?

  • I am able to perform most data mining tasks by leaning on the tools themselves, however I don't necessarily understand WHAT is going on - a dangerous combination. How can I get deeper? Should I do some reading on statistical analysis? Learn a package like 'R' which isn't quite as friendly as tools which abstract away the "hard stuff"?

    If you want to get a better understanding of what is going on, I'd say try to implement some of the data mining algorithms yourself. At university, I did that in Matlab, but you can also use free tools like R. Also, it's important to know what assumptions each model makes about the data.
