Are stickers normally waterproof?

How do you make a machine that prints waterproof thermal stickers?

  • I want to make a machine that can print waterproof thermal stickers about 12mm wide. I have Arduino Uno and Arduino Leonardo. And I want to use Arudino to control a thermal printer to printer waterproof label to stick on my own bottle, etc. I can buy Brother Laminated Black On White Tape 2Pack on Amazon. But I wonder that is there any part for thermal printer can print this type of tape and can be controlled by Arduino?

  • Answer:

As you have perhaps surmised the waterproof nature of the label is in the label materials (adhesive, media, and top covering). The p-touch printers are fairly inexpensive.  The print head is controlled to print letters and symbols of varying size and font.  There is likely not a convenient port to access the internal electronics but if you are building your own controller it seems you might be able to work out the electronics to bypass the p-touch internals and use the device as a printer.  Alternatively, the user group for Arudino may have some experience advice.

's  answer covers both the aspects of your question pretty well.  If you want to make the material really waterproof for an extended period of time, you can explore some coating or laminating options after printing - but then this would be an additional step in the process.
