If Wikipedia.com were a private company how much would it be worth?

How much would Wikipedia be worth as a private company?

  • This is a follow-up question to .

  • Answer:

I think that you have to consider the repercussions to the website if it was a private company. It wouldn't be the same website. It depends on work of thousands of volunteers who donate their time and work because Wikipedia is set up as a nonprofit. One can't assume these contributions would continue at the same rate & quality if a company was profiting off their work. And the strength of Wikipedia is that it continually being revised and improved. If it were frozen at its current state, it would immediately lose some of its value.

I'm not sure what the absolute highest amount I'd pay is, but I can say that I would definitely pay for it if it was sub $15/month. I think the only online services I currently pay for are Netflix (streaming) and Spotify, and I imagine most people pay for a lot more than two online services. Considering this and the fact that I click on Wikipedia about 1000 times a day, I would definitely be willing to pay $10 to $15 to always have access to it.

Business Insider made a (very rough) estimate of private company valuations based on traffic a few years, and came up with a $7B figure. This may be way off (the methodology is suspect), and probably only serves as a ball-park number, but the order of magnitude is probably right: Wikipedia would be worth billions of dollars as a private company. http://www.businessinsider.com/sai25/live

I seem to remember Larry Lessig saying that Wikipedia was leaving conservatively $100 million on the table per year by not having advertising. Using a conservative P/E ratio of 20, Wikipedia should be worth at least $2 billion.

I don't see any relation between Facebook being worth $50 billion and the worth of Wikipedia. Having said this, Wikipedia is a Non-profit organization hence shouldn't be valued as a privatly or publicly owned company.
